White backflips then goes into witness protection

10 February 2019

Days after Rebecca White fractured her party with a humiliating backflip on Labor’s pokie policy, she has gone into hiding with more questions being raised about her policy position and her leadership.

On Friday, during the ABC Hobart Mornings programme discussing pokies, Rebecca White backflipped spectacularly and dumped her signature pokies policy.

Surprisingly in a bizarre interview on Friday afternoon, just hours after Rebecca White’s humiliating backflip, Deputy Labor leader Michelle O’Byrne said;

“State Labor stands by the policy we took to the election and that was to remove pokie machines from pubs and clubs and that was to be done in the renegotiation of the agreement.”

Today, Labor supporters and former candidates have taken to social media to criticise Rebecca White’s move, seen by many as a last ditched attempt to save her leadership.

So where is Rebecca White and why won’t she front the media to fully explain Labor’s positon?

Does Labor still support the removal of pokies from pubs and clubs?

Does Labor still support a policy that would see thousands of Tasmanian hospitality workers lose their jobs?

Rebecca White must fully explain why, after a year of defending her job destroying policy, she has now demonstrated that her policy wasn't based on principle rather it was all about politics.

Was it because David O’Byrne and his supporters are moving to remove her as leader?

Or was it Bill Shorten and her federal colleagues placing overwhelming pressure on her because they need the money Labor makes from their own pokies to pay for their election campaign?

Or was it both?

This bizarre episode proves Rebecca White’s leadership is on the edge and that Ms White will put politics before principle every time to save her skin. It is time she explains herself to Tasmanians.
