Rebecca White’s humiliating pokies backflip

8 February 2019

Rebecca White’s humiliating backflip on gaming machines today is a clear admission that she was wrong, that her policy would have destroyed jobs, and that the Liberal Government’s policy is the right one.

Up until today, Ms White had insisted that the pokies policy would remain. In one sudden embarrassing back down, the policy is gone, the website is gone*, and Ms White’s credibility is gone with it.

The stunning about-face today shows Rebecca White’s leadership is on the edge. It shows that for Ms White this was all about politics. She thought it would win her the election, it didn’t, and now she’s tossed it aside to try and hold on to her leadership.

Now Ms White has accepted the mandate we received at the election for our sensible position on gaming, she should do the same on other key policies such as mandatory minimum sentences for serious child sex offenders.

Rebecca White on pokies

4 March 2018 - “I know that the Labor party’s position is not going to change on this, we remain firm on our view that poker machines should be restricted to casinos.”

20 June 2018 - "The Tasmanian Labor Party remains firmly committed to the policy position we took to the last election."

September 8 2018 “Labor recognises that poker machines are the source of so much pain and poverty in the community. Quite simply it was, and still is, the right thing to do”
