Making electricity concessions simpler and keeping costs low

The Hodgman Liberal Government will ensure eligible Tasmanians do not miss out on electricity concessions because of administrative errors or delays beyond their control.

Previously, authorised electricity retailers were only able to pay concessions from the date they were advised, normally by Centrelink, that a customer was eligible, rather than the date the customer met the eligibility requirements.

This meant that if there was a backlog in the processing of applications, or if the person was incorrectly deemed to be ineligible, by the time their eligibility was confirmed the customer would have missed out on their electricity concession for weeks, or even months.

The Government regards this as being inconsistent with the policy intent of providing concessions to Tasmanians most in need.

From today, where there has been an administrative error or delay outside an eligible customer’s control, retailers are now able to backdate the payment concessions from the date the person became eligible, up to a maximum of 12 months.

Also, in line with the Hodgman Liberal Government’s commitment to keep energy prices low, the new concessions order gazetted today increases the rate of all electricity concessions by 2 per cent in line with the price cap increase.
